Obituary

William “Bill” Uebel, 93, of Peru passed away at home on July 27, 2023, with his wife at his side.

Bill was born September 4, 1929, in Peru to the late Rudolf and Mae (Opie) Uebel.

Bill was a graduate of LP Township High School (1947) and LPO Junior College (1949). Bill served in the U.S. Army from 1951-1953 before becoming a reservist until 1957. He was married to Norma Storkman from 1951-1968.  They had two daughters, Christine and Holly.

Bill attended Northern Illinois University where he received his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in education.  He began his teaching career in 1956 at Belvidere High School.  Then he returned home to teach social sciences at LP High School and LPO Junior College. In 1968, Bill was hired into the initial group of full-time faculty at Illinois Valley Community College, and in 1991, he retired from there as the Chairman of the Social Science Department. Bill was a dedicated educator who was highly regarded by his students. They sought his classes because of his stimulating lectures. Throughout his lifetime he was frequently approached by former students who thanked him for being a great teacher and impacting their future. Bill’s love of education inspired many to pursue a similar career, including his two daughters.

Bill married Ronnie Levine in 1997.  They enjoyed traveling, especially their trips to Chicago, Las Vegas, and wintering in Naples. You could frequently find them dining in their favorite local establishments. One of Bill’s favorite pastimes was playing golf with his good friends and enjoying a beer and cigar at the 19th hole. He also loved cars, especially convertibles, having been the proud owner of five. He was well-known for his incredible sweet tooth and never passed by a candy dish without helping himself. Bringing Bill something sweet, made you a life-long friend.

Bill is survived by his loving wife Ronnie (Levine) Uebel, daughters Christine Uebel and Holly (Mark Lipinski) Uebel; one grandson, Daniel Uebel Lipinski, and one brother, Rudy Uebel, all of Peru.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Patricia Ruppert.

Bill was a loving husband, father, and grandfather who will be greatly missed.

At his request, there will be no visitation, and the burial service will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to his family to be used to create a scholarship at IVCC in Bill’s name.
