Wayne Howarth Obituary

Wayne T. Howarth, 96, of La Salle, passed away peacefully on Wednesday February 28, 2024 surrounded by his loving family.

Mass of Christian burial will be 11:00 AM Monday at St. Patrick’s Church in La Salle with Rev. Paul Carlson officiating. Burial will follow at St. Vincent’s Cemetery with full military services conducted by the La Salle-Oglesby Veteran’s Memorial Group. Visitation will be in the church on Monday from 9:30 AM until time of services. The Hurst Funeral Home in La Salle is assisting his family with arrangements.

Wayne Thomas Howarth was born in Peru on October 2, 1927 to Thomas and Johanna (Fitzpatrick) Howarth. He graduated from St. Mary’s Grade School in Peru, La Salle-Peru High School, LPO Junior College, and Bradley University. Shortly after graduation from high school, Wayne was drafted in the United States Army. He served in the Army of the Occupation in Tokyo Japan with General Douglas McCarthur’s Headquarters Company. Wayne married Lynn King on September 2, 1950 in St. Patrick’s Church in La Salle.

Mr. Howarth was an active member of St. Patrick’s Parish, serving on the parish councils. He also served as president of St. Patrick’s School Board. Wayne retired from the Illinois Department of Transportation in 1991 as business services manager after sixteen and a half years. He was also a board member of the Ottawa Hiway Credit Union for many years. During his retirement, Wayne volunteered as a Red Coat at Peru IVCH for twenty years, and he and Lynn delivered Meals on Wheels for many years. He was a founding member of the Black Watch Color Guard. Wayne enjoyed golf and was a member of Deer Park Country Club. He also enjoyed gardening, woodworking, and handyman projects. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family.

Mr. Howarth is survived by his bride of 73 years, Lynn and their three children Lisa (John) Zielinski, Leslie (Richard) Miller, and Lori (Claudia Gerstle) Howarth; three grandchildren Adam Thomas Miller, Andrew Paul Miller, and Maxine Lynn Miller; one sister Leta Kozel; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter Lynn Marie; brothers Thomas, Kenneth, Harry, and Leonard; and a brother-in-law Cyril Kozel.
