Viola Mae Lannen, 94, of Detroit, MI, formerly of La Salle, died on December 3, 2023.
Graveside services will be at 11:00 AM on May 11, 2024 at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens in La Salle. The Hurst Funeral Home in La Salle has been entrusted with her arrangements. Following the services, a luncheon will be held at Verucchi's in Spring Valley.
Ms. Lannen was born on November 27, 1929 in LaSalle, IL, to John and Viola Ruth (Hughett) Lannen. Her early years were spent in La Salle, where her father was the lock attendant at Lock 14. She was a graduate of St. Cecilia High School in Detroit, Marygrove College with a Bachelor's Degree in history and a Master's Degree in education, and the University of Michigan with a Master's Degree in Library Science. She taught first grade in the Detroit Public School System for 35 years.
Viola was a master bridge champion, competing in tournaments worldwide. She loved to experience other cultures and was an avid traveler and member of the Nomads Travel Club, enjoying and sharing many visits to Europe, Africa, and China with her travel companion and good friend, Tom. She also loved going to the movies and reading, and usually had two or three books going at any given time.
Ms. Lannen is survived by her cousins Lois Harvey of Ottawa, Carol Hughett of Princeton, and James (Rebecca) Hughett of La Salle.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Joan Degens.
