Sylvia Kirsteatter Obituary

Sylvia Kirsteatter of Peru, passed away peacefully on July 10, 2021.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 AM Thursday in St. Valentine’s Church in Peru with the Rev J.A. Small officiating. Burial will be in Peru City Cemetery. A full military service will also be conducted on that day, for her late husband, Louis Kirsteatter, by the Peru Veteran’s Memorial Group. Visitation will be 5:00 until 7:00 PM Wednesday in the Hurst Funeral Home in LaSalle and also Thursday from 10:00 AM until time of services in the church.

Born on May 14, 1932, in LaSalle, to the late Anna and John Meglan, Sylvia and her sister Marilynn (Hurley) spent an idyllic childhood growing up in Oglesby. She attended L-P High School (Class of 1949) and married her high school sweetheart, the late Louis James Kirsteatter, Sr. (L.J.).  They were married and best friends for 62 years, and he assuredly welcomed her with open arms.

Sylvia delighted in raising three sons (well, mostly!), Gary, Jim, and L.J., Jr.  She could always be found on the sidelines cheering on their athletic and scouting achievements.  Sylvia and L.J. enjoyed traveling, and visited son Gary and his family at each of his military assignments. However, she also enjoyed her home and beautiful backyard and was an avid reader. Sylvia worked for Carus Publishing Company for over 25 years, volunteered at IVCH Gift Shop for many years after retirement, and was always active with her Class Reunion Committee.

Sylvia was very proud of granddaughter, Kelly Favret, and the light of her life were her two great-grandchildren, Colin and Clare Favret—always delighting in hearing of their latest antics and achievements. They will truly miss their GGMa.

In addition to her husband, Sylvia was preceded in death by her two sons, James and Louis, Jr. She is survived by her sister Marilynn Hurley, of Peru; brother-in-law Lynn Kirsteatter (Marge) of Conover, WI; her son Gary (Maureen) Kirsteatter of Yorktown, VA; granddaughter Kelly (Derek) Favret of Chesapeake Beach, MD; and great-grandchildren, Colin and Clare.  She will also be missed by many loving nieces and nephews.
