Russell "Russ" Moss Obituary

Russell “Russ” A. Moss, 75, of Oglesby passed away after an extended illness at his home on January 6, 2024 surrounded by loved ones.

Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Saturday at the Hurst Funeral Home in La Salle with family friend Mark Strand leading prayers. Burial will follow at St. Vincent’s Cemetery in La Salle with military honors conducted by the La Salle/Oglesby Veterans Memorial Group. Visitation will be in the funeral home on Saturday from 9:00 AM until time of services.

Russ was born in Spring Valley on January 5, 1949 to Russell F. and Norma J. (Yerly) Moss. He proudly served with the United States Army from 1967 to 1969 as a lineman in Vietnam. Russ married Dawn Johnson on October 24, 1989. He worked as a mechanic.

Russ was proud of being a veteran. He was an avid collector and loved cars. His grandchildren and his family were his life and meant everything to him. Papa was his favorite title. He always helped with the grandchildren, and he made sure to have ice cream for them. Russ was generous and caring and was ready to do anything for anyone. He was a regular supporter of the Wounded Warriors Project and St. Jude’s. Russ will be remembered as stubborn, a jokester, and Trump supporter.

Russ is survived by seven children: Mary (Joe) Cabral of MO, Laura Moss of NY, Tracy Elfers of FL, Azure Moss of IL, Megan (Ray) Miller of IL, Jessica (Jose Hernandez) of IL, and Zach (Siobhan) Moss of IL; thirteen grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; seven siblings Dave (Sue) Moss, Steve (Melody) Moss, Randy Moss, Tammy (Rick) Evans, Kim Margowski, Gina (Craig) Keeney, and Ray (Heidi) Moss; many nieces and nephews; and his caregivers Betsy and Lori.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Dawn Moss on August 26, 2015, a son Jesse in infancy, and two grandsons Isaiah and Nathan.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Wounded Warriors Project or St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
