Michael A. Mendola Jr., 79, of Wenona, passed away after a brief illness on January 14, 2023, surrounded by family and friends at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria.
Mass of Christian burial will be 10:00 AM Wednesday in St. Mary’s Church in Wenona with the Franciscan Friars officiating. Burial will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Wenona. Visitation will be 5-7:00 PM Tuesday at the Hurst Funeral Home in Wenona. Additional visitation will be in the church on Wednesday from 9:00 AM until time of services.
Mike was born in Buffalo, NY on February 9, 1943 to Michael and Helen (Schuster) Mendola Sr. He was married for many years to Kathleen Bardo. He served with the United States Army Reserves. He worked as an industrial sales engineer.
Mike was a multi-faceted person, equally at home belting out karaoke tunes and organizing for many social and political causes. He was a prolific writer of short stories. He enjoyed woodworking, renovating houses, and cooking for his family and friends. He loved learning new things. He will be remembered for his lively sense of humor, sharp mind, and generous heart.
Mike was a member of St. Mary’s Parish, the Wenona American Legion, and the Wenona Rotary Club.
Mike is survived by three children Annette (John Nolt) Mendola, Michael (Danine) Mendola III, and Laura (Todd) Lusk; six grandchildren Evora Kreis, Brandon Tabor, Emma Mendola, Jessica Mendola, Rosemary Lusk, and Violet Lusk; sister: Linda (Angelo) Polisano; brother: Mark (Mary Beth) Mendola; two nephews Mark Mendola Jr. and Brian Mendola; niece Adriana Polisano; and many beloved cousins, neighbors and dear friends.
