Michael P. Layden, 67, of La Salle, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on April 11, 2026.
Funeral services will be 12:00 PM Saturday, April 18, at the Hurst Funeral Home in La Salle with Rev. William Clark, OSF Hospice Chaplain, officiating. Burial will be at Peru City Cemetery. Visitation will be in the funeral home on Saturday from 9:00 AM until time of services.
Michael was born in Angeles City, Philippines on October 11, 1958 to John and Anastasia (Reyes) Layden. He married Nancy Pavy on September 9, 1978. He worked at Sundstrand and then 30 years for Caterpillar in Pontiac, retiring 15 years ago.
Michael had a passion for life and was liked by everyone who met him. He was most proud of his family and grandchildren and spoke about them often with great pride. He loved his family.
Mike enjoyed playing poker, pool, men’s softball, euchre, frisbee golf, horseshoes, and pickle ball. He also enjoyed fishing, hiking, camping, gardening, and was an avid sports fan. After retirement he volunteered for Meals on Wheels, Habitat Restore of Peru and the Food Pantry.
Above all, Michael lived an active life and embraced every moment. He loved deeply, laughed often, and left a lasting impression on everyone he met.
Michael is survived by his wife Nancy of La Salle; two daughters, Amy Mertes of La Salle and Katie (Julio Sanchez) Layden of La Salle; four grandchildren, Julius and Marissa Sanchez, Callie and Kiera Mertes; two sisters, Kathleen (Mike) Ladzinski of Peru and Rita (Kenny Stiles) Santoro of Florida; two brothers, Kevin (Gina) Layden of Arizona and Dennis Layden of California; many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Pallbearers will be, Jeremy Grubich, Derek Klieber, Kevin Layden, Greg Oseland, Julio Sanchez, Julius Sanchez, Tom Scott, and Chris Washkowiak.
