Karyn Gehm, 78, of La Salle died peacefully surrounded by her family due to complications from an illness on August 29, 2021 at Northwestern Medicine Kishwaukee Hospital in DeKalb.
Per Karyn’s wishes, cremation rites have been accorded and there will be no services. The Hurst Funeral Home in La Salle is assisting the family with arrangements.
Karyn was born in Spring Valley on November 9, 1942 to Donald and Dorothy (Bildhauer) Harrison. She graduated from La Salle-Peru Township High School in 1960 and Streator School of Practical Nursing in 1972. She worked as a nurse, in various capacities, in the nursing field. She owned and operated Karyn’s Kountry in the Village in Utica. She was an artist who also taught various types of painting classes.
Karyn loved spending time with her family and was extremely proud of her grandchildren. She enjoyed reading, gardening, especially working with her flower garden. She was a member of the Slovenian Women’s Club.
Karyn is survived by her son Todd (Jaci) Ferguson of Peru; one daughter Tara (Chuck) Kraft of Joliet; and five grandchildren Sheridan and Payton Ferguson, Austyn, Carrie, and Alyssa Kraft.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother Donald “Butch” Harrison, and one stepbrother Randy Kolanowski.
