John "Darnell" Mann Obituary

John “Darnell” Mann, 90, of Wenona, passed away December 16, 2022 at OSF Center for Health in Streator.

Funeral services will be 1:00 PM Tuesday December 27 at the Hurst Funeral Home in Wenona with Sheila Healy officiating. Visitation will be in the funeral home on Tuesday from 11:00 AM until time of services. Chicago Cubs attire would be appropriate for the service. Cremation rites will follow services. Burial will be in Cumberland Cemetery in the spring with full military honors conducted. A notice will be published prior to that service.

Mr. Mann was born in Magnolia on the family farm on January 11, 1932 to Virgil and Phoebe (Crone) Mann Sr. He served with the United States Army during the Korean War. He married Dorothy Myszkowski on August 18, 1956. He worked at Owen’s in Streator for 45 years. As a side job, he painted homes and barns.

Darnell was a member of the Marshall County Sportsman’s Club, Sandy Ford Sportsman’s Club, and Wenona American Legion. He was a lifelong avid Chicago Cubs fan. He enjoyed playing Bingo, playing cards, fishing, trapping, bowling, and working in his yard, especially his garden. He loved spending time with his grandson. Along with his wife Dorothy, they were the 2019 Grand Marshalls for the Wenona Days parade. On May 8, 2018, Darnell participated in the Honor Flight to Washington DC.

Mr. Mann is survived by two children Scott (Laura) Mann of Spring Valley and Kim (Bill Lehr) Mackiewicz of Streator; one grandson Nick (Sarah) Mann of Ladd; and one sister Mary Lou (Don) Smith of Wenona.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Dorothy on March 8, 2020; a granddaughter Melissa; his stepmother Velma Mann; two sisters Phyllis Kraushaar and Dolores Delheimer; and three brothers Gene Mann, Virgil Mann Jr., and Roger Mann.

Memorials may be directed to the Cumberland Cemetery Association.
