Hazel M. Soberri, 96, of Wenona, passed away January 15, 2026 in OSF Saint Clare Medical Center in Princeton.
Mass of Christian burial will be 11:00 AM Thursday, January 22, at St. Mary’s Church in Wenona with the Franciscan Friars officiating. Burial will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery. Visitation will be in the church on Thursday from 10:00 AM until time of services. The Hurst Funeral Home in Wenona has been entrusted with her arrangements.
Mrs. Soberri was born in Wasburn on November 14, 1929 to Leslie I. and Hope E. (Gill) Bursott. She married Peter P. Soberri in 1947 in Lacon.
Mrs. Soberri was a member of St. Mary’s Church in Wenona and former member of Resurrection Church in La Salle. She also helped Msgr. Swaner at each of the churches he served. She was a member of several Altar and Rosary and Sanctuary Societies. She was a CCD teacher for fifteen years and also helped as needed in her retirement.
Mrs. Soberri was known for her cooking and baking, especially her cinnamon rolls, divinity, and wild game. “If you could shoot it, hunt it, fish it, she could cook it.” She also loved gardening, canning, collecting coffee mugs, and bird watching. She also enjoyed learning family history and researching genealogy.
Mrs. Soberri is survived by one daughter, Carol “Sue” Vargochik of Henderson, NV; one son, Joseph P. Soberri of Tonica; four grandchildren, Tami Vargochik of Las Vegas, NV, Danae Vargochik of Las Vegas, NV, Liz Soberri of Tonica, and Ryan Soberri of Wenona; several nieces and nephews, including Julie (Kenny) Yochum; and several great nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Peter, one son, Mark Soberri, one daughter-in-law, Patricia Soberri, one son-in-law, Daniel Vargochik, one brother, and one sister.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Leonore or Tonica Fire Department.
