Florence "Flo" Smorkol

Florence “Flo” Smorkol, 91, of La Salle, passed away March 6, 2019 in OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria with her loving family at her side.

Mass of Christian burial will be 11:00 AM Monday in St. Patrick’s Church in La Salle with Rev. Gregory Jarzombek OSB officiating.  Visitation will be in the church on Monday from 10:00 AM until time of services.  The Hurst Funeral Home in La Salle is handling arrangements.

Flo was born in La Salle on November 14, 1927 to Andrew and Rose (Pelko) Urbanc.  She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.  She was married to her loving husband John Smorkol for 62 years.  She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.  Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren brought joy and light into her life.  Her family and keeping up her home brought her tremendous happiness.  She touched everyone with her thoughtfulness.

Florence began her 40 plus years nursing career in 1948 at St. Mary’s and IVCH Hospitals.  She touched many lives with her caring and compassionate care.  Her nursing friendships were enduring and brought lasting enjoyment to her life.  Her feisty personality and straight talking will be remembered by anyone who met her.  Her great cooking, especially her pies, roasts and soups will be missed.

Florence is survived by her four children, Susan (Dr. Jeffrey) Blanco of Oglesby, Andrew (Patricia) Smorkol of La Salle, Steven Smorkol of Streamwood and Patricia Smorkol of Warrenville; three grandchildren, Nicole Gallen, Ryan Blanco and Michael Monn; four great-grandchildren, Tess and Rory Gallen, Marty and Oliver Blanco; sister-in-law Dorothy Urbanc.

She was preceded in death by her infant daughter Laurie Ann, husband John, sisblings, Rose (Stan) Furlan, Chuck Urbanc, Dorothy (Bill) and twin sister Ann (Bill) Matthews.
