Darren R. Nawa

Darren R. Nawa, 51, of Peru, passed away at home surrounded by his family on April 24, 2023 after an extended illness.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 AM Friday in St. Patrick’s Church in La Salle with The Very Rev. Thomas Otto and Rev. Michael Pica officiating.  Burial will be in Peru City Cemetery.  Visitation will be 4 to 7:00 PM Thursday in the Hurst Funeral Home in La Salle and in the church on Friday from 9:30 AM until time of services.

Darren was born in La Salle on March 31, 1972 to Richard and Mary (Stanhouse) Nawa.  He married Julee Derango in Holy Rosary Church in La Salle on April 25, 1998.  He graduated from La Salle-Peru Township High School in 1990 and Chicago College of Pharmacy in 1996. He worked as a manager at Walmart Pharmacy in Peru, then Hy-Vee and St. Margaret’s Health in Spring Valley.

Darren was a member of La Salle Catholic Parishes and past member of Cedar Point Sportmen’s Club. Darren was an amazing man whose greatest joy in life was his family. Spending time with his family meant everything to him. He enjoyed hiking, boating, camping, skiing, and traveling. He was a handyman and enjoyed coaching his kids in their sporting activities. Darren was an avid Dallas Cowboy Fan. 

Darren is survived by his wife Julee; four children, Alec, who is serving in the United States Navy as a Nuclear Engineer, Abby, Morgan and Ryan, all at home; his mother MaryDean Stanhouse Yerly of La Salle; two sisters, Michelle (Mike) Waite of Peru and Kim (Jeff) Filipiak of La Salle; his in-laws, Marius and Sharon Derango of Peru; sister-in-law Chris (Todd) Garretson of Peru; brother-in-law Jeff (Beth) Derango of Peru; many of nieces and nephews; step-mother Betty Nawa of La Salle.

He was preceded in death by his father Richard Nawa and step-father John Yerly.
