Daniel E. Lawler, 90, of La Salle passed away Wednesday, November 1, 2023 at his home.
A private Catholic service was held on November 5, 2023 at Hurst Funeral Home in La Salle with Fr. Paul Carlson oﬃciating.
Daniel was born in La Salle on October 31, 1933. He married Susan L. Duncan on June 15, 1963 at St. Patrick’s Church in La Salle. Daniel graduated St. Bede Academy in 1952 and then attended the University of Illinois. Following school, Daniel served in the United States Navy. While in the Navy, he served as an announcer on the Armed Forces Radio Network. He was also a member of the Navy Precision Drill Squad and the Navy Mediterranean Boxing Team. After completing his military service, Daniel worked in radio at WLPO before purchasing and operating the Varsity Shop, a men's clothing store in downtown La Salle.
Daniel joined the La Salle State Bank team in 1963 as a Teller and rose through the ranks to become the bank’s ﬁfth President and Chairman of the Board in January 1990. During his tenure with the bank, Daniel continued his studies at the University of Wisconsin Graduate School of Banking, the University of North Carolina School of Employee Beneﬁts, and the Cannon Financial Institute Trust School. He also completed the Bank Administration Institute School of Bank Management, the Illinois Bankers Association Commercial Credit School, and the Illinois Bankers Association Consumer Credit School.
As President, Daniel oversaw tremendous growth in the bank’s assets, the acquisition of the Community Bank of Utica, and the construction of the Peru branch. After retiring on December 31, 2010, he remained on the bank's governing board as a Director, a position he retained until his passing, completing 60 years of service to the organization.
Daniel was active in numerous civic aﬀairs, including serving on the Illinois Valley Area Chamber of Commerce and the local American Red Cross Board. He was past President of the La Salle County Cancer Society, and served as Board President of Lighted Way Children’s Development Center. He served on the board of governors of the Illinois Valley Community Hospital for 17 years and was a Trustee of the Hygienic Institute.
Daniel is survived by his wife Susan (Duncan) Lawler; daughter Anne (Michael) Crowley; son Daniel (Ariella) Lawler; grandchildren Tyler (Allison Blackburn) Crowley, Ali (Josh) Deacon, Neal (Alex Yeadon) Crowley, and Duncan Lawler; two brothers; and one sister.
Daniel was proceeded in death by his parents and his faithful dog Charlie.
Pallbearers were Tyler Crowley, Ali Deacon, Neal Crowley, Duncan Lawler, and Mike Crawford.
In lieu of ﬂowers, memorials may be directed to St. Bede Academy.
