Amy Surf Obituary

It is with great sadness that the family of Amy June Surf, 50, announces her passing on January 13, 2025.  Amy was born in Waukegan, IL on January 26, 1974, to Karen and Alan Surf. Amy and her mom were an inseparable duo throughout her childhood, but when the evolving challenges of Rett Syndrome led to Amy’s needing a higher level of care, she transitioned to a residential care program.

Amy spent the past 30 years as a resident of Horizon House in Peru, IL, where she participated in the day program according to her whimsy, enjoyed regular community outings to favorite destinations like Target and local thrift shops, and returned (always) to the house on Becker Street, where she felt secure and loved.

Amy’s world was smaller than most, but the people, pleasures, and routines that patterned her days brought her profound joy, and in turn, she spread boundless love and humor to others. Those who knew her best describe Amy as a lover of comfort - there was never a cozy blanket, fleece frock or snug chair she’d turn down, and she was quite opinionated when it came to her preferred snacks, salty and sweet (just like her).

Amy’s family would like to express their immense gratitude to the host of staff and caregivers at Horizon House who supported her over the years, infusing her life with meaningful activity, providing social opportunities, and fostering relationships that she held dear.

Our heartfelt thanks to the medical and hospice staff at OSF Healthcare St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Peru, as well, for their kindness and compassion during Amy’s final transition.

Amy is survived by her uncle, Raymond (Ann) Syverson; her aunt, Elizabeth (Mike) Barr; her first cousins, April (Jessica) Syverson, Mary (Mark) Nissen, Rebecca (Jon) Feucht, Sarah (Ben) Durr, and Julie (Tegan) Godfrey; and their children. She is preceded in death by her mother, Karen Franco (nee Syverson); and her grandparents, June (nee Hodgkins) and Robert Syverson.

Cremation rights have been accorded, and a celebration of life will be held in Chicago at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Amy’s name to Horizon House (www.horizonhouseperu.org) or the International Rett Syndrome Foundation.
