Alvin Ray Smith, 93, of Peru, passed away September 24, 2023 in La Salle County Nursing Home in Ottawa.
He was active in his church and was giving of his time and talents to others. He was a volunteer as a driver for Meals on Wheels.
There will not be any services. The Hurst Funeral Home in La Salle is entrusted with Mr. Smith’s arrangements.
Alvin was born in Wyanet, IL on July 7, 1930 to Lawrence “Casey” and Beatrice (Thompson) Smith. He spent 3 years in the military with the Airborne and afterward married Lois Radtke of Peru on January 30, 1954.
Alvin farmed for 25 years near Spring Valley and retired from truck driving for Air Products in 1993.
He is survived by his wife Lois of Peru; two sons, Thomas A. (Tina) Smith of La Salle and Timothy R. (Andrea) Smith of Bend, Oregon; two daughters, Paula J. (John) Castelli of Ottawa and Linda S. Terando of Morris; four grandchildren, Amanda (Brian) Overton, Matthew Castelli, Samuel (Mandy) Castelli, and James Castelli; two great-grandchildren, Kyle Overton and Zoey Overton; one sister Carol Bogatitis of Spring Valley.
Alvin was preceded in death by one grandson Joshua Terando of Morris; one sister Peggy Kinkin of Spring Valley, two brothers Gilbert Smith of Bradenton, Florida and William T. Smith of Farmington Hills, Michigan.
