Susan (Vogel) Taylor

Susan Vogel Taylor, 71, of Peru, died September 19, 2018 in her home surrounded by her family after a courageous battle with brain cancer. 

A memorial service will be conducted by Joe Hogan at 6:00 PM Sunday in the Hurst Funeral Home in La Salle. Visitation will be from 3:00 PM Sunday until time of services.  Burial will be private in Peru City Cemetery at a later date.

Susan was born July 7, 1947 in Peru to William J. and Lillian (Petitti) Vogel. She graduated from La Salle-Peru Township High School in 1965 and LPO Junior College in 1967. She married Frank P. Taylor Jr. on June 9, 1968 at Trinity United Church of Christ in La Salle. Susan and her husband were the owners of Bill Vogel Chevrolet and Illinois Valley Leasing Company. She held many offices for the La Salle Northwest Elementary School PTA which included being elected PTA President in 1977 to 1979. Susan was appointed to the La Salle Elementary School Board in 1989 and was subsequently elected and served until 1991.

Susan taught preschool classes at the Illinois Valley YMCA for several years. She was also a substitute aid in the Peru, Mendota, and DePue schools. She loved helping the students and they too enjoyed being with her. She made many friends with the teachers with whom she worked.

She was past President of the La Salle-Peru Jayettes, a service organization affiliated with the LP Jaycees.

The most important people in Susan’s life were her husband, two sons and daughters-in-law, and five grandchildren. Susan adored her grandchildren, and they were her greatest devotion. She loved watching them participate in school activities, play sports, and perform on cheer teams. She was always seated on the sidelines cheering them on.

Organizing family celebrations gave her much happiness. She thoroughly enjoyed hosting holidays, birthdays, graduation parties, or little “Tea Parties” with her granddaughters. She had a gift for making each celebration special. 

Family memories of many trips to Disney World are especially cherished. During her later years, the entire family took many trips to Attica, IN and Silverlake, MI where she and Frank enjoyed riding their side-by-side razor on the sand.

Susan is survived by her husband Frank Taylor Jr. of Peru; two sons Frank P. (Terri Sons) Taylor III and James (Jennifer Hawkins) Taylor; beloved grandchildren Evan, Morgan, Cailey, Connor, and Cameron Taylor; sister Mary Alice Vogel (Vern) Vaudrin of Denver, CO; sister-in-law Sandra Taylor Banghart of Easton, PA; and many loving nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her mother and father.
