Shirley M. Hayden, 87, of La Salle, died June 8, 2018 in Villa St. Benedict Assisted Living in Lisle.
Mass of Christian burial will be 11:00 AM Saturday in St. Patrick’s Church in La Salle with the Very Rev. Paul Carlson officiating. Burial will be in St. Vincent’s Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-8:00 PM Friday at the Hurst Funeral Home in La Salle with a rosary to be recited at 7:30 PM. Additional visitation will be in the church on Saturday from 10:00 AM until time of services.
Mrs. Hayden was born in La Salle on December 28, 1930 to John and Mildred (Casserly) Bowers. She married Donald W. Hayden on August 16, 1952.
Shirley graduated from St. Joseph’s Hospital School of Nursing in Chicago in 1951. She later received her bachelor’s degree at St. Francis College in Joliet. She was a registered nurse and worked as a nursing supervisor at Illinois Valley Community Hospital on the 2nd floor.
Shirley enjoyed golfing, playing bridge, and traveling. She was a Lighted Way board member for 10 years. She was a member of Deer Park Country Club, St. Patrick’s Church, the Altar and Rosary Society of St. Patrick’s, and a Eucharistic Minister for many years. Along with her husband, they volunteered for Meals on Wheels and served as St. Bede Auction co-chairs.
Mrs. Hayden is survived by three daughters Mary Kay (Dr. Seshan) Subramanian of Darien, Patricia (Dr. John Murray) Hayden of Downers Grove, and Jacqueline (Grant Lucyk) Hayden of Denver, CO; two sons Donald (Brian Thompson) Hayden of Miami Shores, FL and John (Kari) Hayden of Oak Park; eight grandchildren David (Aimee) Subramanian, Andrew (Kate) Subramanian, Jaya (Luke) Lizalde, Courtney (David) Quinn, Madeline Murray, Cole Hayden, Nicholas Hayden, and Millie Lucyk; six great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband Donald on March 22, 2006 and her parents.
Pallbearers will be her grandchildren.
Memorial may be directed to St. Patrick’s Church, St. Bede Academy, or Benedictine Sisters of the Sacred Heart.
