Samuel “Sam” Matern, 80, of Toluca, formerly of Wenona, passed away at home on August 2, 2018.
Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Tuesday in the Hurst Funeral Home in Wenona with Rev. Peter M. Glock officiating. Burial will be in Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Wenona. Visitation will be in the funeral home on Tuesday from 9:30 AM until time of services.
Sam was born on August 11, 1937 to Edward and Anna Matern. He was raised in Wenona by his foster parents Ben and Minnie Kluck. He served in the United States Air National Guard. He worked at Caterpillar in Mossville for 31 years, retiring in 1997. Sam married Betty Travis on June 20, 1958. He was a member of the Wenona American Legion and past member of Marshall County Sportsman Club. He enjoyed hunting, raising bird dogs, camping, trap shooting, and working on cars.
Sam is survived by his wife Betty of 60 years; daughter Sandy (Guy) Hattan of Toluca; son Gary (Anna) Matern of Fort Myers, FL; three granddaughters Misty Vitale, Kelsey Matern, and Kaycee Matern; and sister Rosemary Matern of LA.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his foster parents, one sister Gladys Sipe, three brothers Francis and two in infancy.
