Edward "Ed" E. Shields

Edward “Ed” E. Shields, 85, of Peru, formerly of Ladd passed away peacefully surrounded by family on January 20, 2020 at St. Joseph’s Nursing Home in Lacon.

Mass of Christian burial will be 11:00 AM Saturday in St. Joseph’s Church in Peru with Monsignor Richard Soseman officiating. Burial will be in Ladd Cemetery. Visitation will be Saturday in the church from 9:30 AM until time of services. The Hurst Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Ed was born in Chicago on February 28, 1934 to John and Mae (Carlson) Shields. He served with the US Army from 1956-1958 as a Sp/4. He married Judy Gualandri on May 22, 1954 in St. Benedict’s Church in Ladd. Ed took an early retirement from Western Sand and Gravel because of health issues.

For many years, Ed was a member of St. Benedict’s Church in Ladd where he was a lector and a member of the Holy Name Society. He was very active in music. He sang in the choir at St. Mary’s Church in Peru. He sang with choruses in La Salle, Pekin, and Bloomington. He was member of the Tune Tippers Quartet, Brandywine Singers, and Alley Cats. He also sang for many weddings. Ed was also a member of the Home Builder’s Association, Concrete Association, and the Ladd Moose since 1965 and served on the Degree Team.

Ed is survived by his wife Judy of Peru; sons Michael (Jan) Shields of Solona Beach, CA and Thomas (Betty) Shields of Peru; two granddaughters Abby and Natalie Shields; and half-brother Dennis.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Jack Shields, sister Kay Adelman, half-brother David Bartley, and half-sister Berdetta Milby.

In lieu of flowers, memorials made be made to St. Joseph’s Nursing Home in Lacon or donor’s choice. 
 

Pallbearers will be Ed Manning, Jim Manning, Mark Manning, Jim Miller, and Curtis Doll.
