Donna M. Schmitz

Donna M. Schmitz, 65, of La Salle, died after an extended illness and surrounded by her family in her home on the morning of August 15, 2019.

Mass of Christian burial will be 11:00 AM Tuesday at St. Mary’s Church in Peru with Msgr. Richard Soseman officiating. Burial will be at a later date in St. Hyacinth’s Cemetery in La Salle. Visitation will be in the church on Tuesday from 9:00 AM until time of services.  The Hurst Funeral Home is assisting her family.

Donna was born in Peru on August 26, 1953 to Walter and Loretta (Filipiak) Mayszak.  She graduated from St. Mary’s Grade School in 1967 and LP High School in 1971 before graduating from beauty school. She married James Schmitz in St. Mary’s Church in Peru on September 1, 1973.

Donna worked as a hairdresser, later at Christopher Banks in the Peru Mall, and lastly Kohl’s in Peru.  She was a member of St. Hyacinth’s Church in La Salle.

Donna enjoyed spending time in her yard and tending to her flowers.  She also enjoyed crafts, decorating her house, and going to antique and garage sales.  Her favorite thing was spending time with her family.

She is survived by her husband James of La Salle; two sons, Matthew (Mary) Schmitz of Peru and Douglas Schmitz of La Salle; two granddaughters, Haley and Jade Schmitz; her father Walter Mayszak of Peru; one sister Karen Mosbach of Earlville; two brothers, Paul (Janet) Mayszak of Peru and Mike (Sherry) Mayszak of Peru.

She was preceded in death by her mother Loretta and grandparents Frank and Stella Filipiak.
