Alfred “Al” L. Pottinger, 78, of Peru, passed away Saturday (September 19, 2015) in Spring Valley.
A Celebration of his life service will begin at 11:00 AM Thursday at the Hurst Funeral Home in LaSalle. A visitation will be held from 3-7:00 PM Wednesday and also from 9-11:00 AM Thursday in the funeral home. Interment will follow in the Peru City Cemetery with full military rites.
He was born on June 27, 1937 in Peru to Alfred Moses & Lena (McCook) Pottinger.
Al graduated from Hall Township High School in 1955. He then served in the United States Army.
He retired from farming in Peru and also retired from Local 150 Operating Engineers.
He was a member of the The Tri-County “S” Troop Snowmobile Club where he served as President, the Ladd American Legion, the Mendota Loyal Order of Moose, the Peru Fraternal Order of Eagles, the Bureau County Farm Bureau, the Peru South Shore Boat club and the Musicians Union 307.
He was the last living member of his band, “Al & His Pals” and was now playing with his band the “Lincolnaires”. He loved music, playing the accordion, and loved life. He was a very hard working man who was always bringing smiles to everyone he met and was the life of the party.
He is survived by 2 sons, Alan Pottinger of Cherry and Jason Pottinger of Peru; 1 stepdaughter, Donna Summers of Peru; 3 stepsons, Joe (Tori) LoCoco, David (Mary) Bend of LaMoile, Les (Clarice) Bend of LaMoille; 2 stepgrandchildren; a sister, Barbara Boehm of Spring Valley; a brother, Thomas (Bernadette) Pottinger of Peru and his significant other, Jeannie Joiner of Spring Valley; 2 nieces, Karen Nerad of Arlington and Sherri Narczewski of Spring Valley; 2 nephews, Michael Znaniecki of Olive Branch, MS and Dennis Znaniecki of LaSalle; 2 great nieces Kylie Znaniecki of Arlington and Samantha Znaniecki of Olive Branch, MS; a great nephew, Kenny Narczewski of Spring Valley and numerous step nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Memorials may be directed to St. Jude’s Children Hospital or the charity of the donor’s choice.
The family requests that casual attire be worn for the visitation and Celebration of Life.
